An armed man was shot by police during a foot pursuit in the 1000 block of N. Los Robles Avenue in Pasadena, sheriff's deputies said.

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- An armed man was shot by police during a foot pursuit in Pasadena Friday morning, sheriff's deputies said.

The officer-involved shooting occurred near Buckeye Street and N. Los Robles Avenue around 9:15 a.m.

"Pasadena police officers attempted to stop a vehicle that had some suspicious activity occurring with it. When they stopped the vehicle, one of the occupants ran from that vehicle north on Los Robles Avenue. During that foot pursuit, the suspect armed himself with a gun and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Capt. Rod Kusch with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Officials said they do not know how many times the officer or suspect fired their weapons.

The suspect was in critical condition, deputies stated. No officers were injured.

Video recorded by an eyewitness showed officers placing the suspect in handcuffs following the shooting.

During the chase and shooting, deputies said two suspects in the vehicle drove off and later dumped the car. Officials were still attempting to locate the suspects.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was called to take over the investigation, which is routine protocol following officer-involved shootings.

Detectives said they were looking into why the officers stopped the vehicle in the first place.

"It'll take us several hours to collect evidence, to assess what's happening, etc.," Kusch said.

The public was asked to avoid the area as sheriff's deputies conducted their investigation. No further details were immediately released.

Anyone with information about this incident was urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
