HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A Huntington Beach city contractor accidentally hit a water main while drilling Wednesday morning, flooding the area near Main Street and Walnut Avenue, officials said.

The area was shut down as the muddy water spewed from a 6-inch hole in the ruptured pipe, city spokeswoman Julie Toledo said.

The contractor was in the process of installing a conduit for a traffic signal.

The immediate water main line was shut down and nearby businesses were not affected, Toledo said. Water service to nearby customers has not been impacted.

The ruptured city pipe will probably be fixed by Thursday morning, Toledo said.
