WESTLAKE DISTRICT, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Authorities were investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Westlake District early Thursday morning.

The Los Angeles Police Department said gang officers in uniform were in a patrol car attempting to stop a man on a bicycle around 11:05 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Temple Street, west of Rampart Boulevard near Echo Park.

At some point an officer-involved shooting broke out, but it was unclear what led to the situation. Authorities said the officers involved were not hurt in the shooting and the suspect was not hit.

During the shooting, the suspect fled the scene into the nearby neighborhood. The suspect was soon found and taken into custody, the LAPD said.

A large perimeter was set up to search for a weapon that officers said the suspect had. The LAPD did not say why officers were trying to detain the man on the bicycle.

No further information was immediately available. The investigation was ongoing.
