If you drive a Nissan, there's a massive recall you'll want to know about.

The auto maker is recalling approximately 3.18 million vehicles in the U.S. because of an issue with the passenger-side airbag. The vehicle sensors may malfunction.

In most cars, the passenger airbag is designed to not deploy unless there is an adult in the seat. But with the defect, sensors could malfunction, making the system think the seat is empty and not deploy a bag when it should.

Nissan said they're aware of at least three crashes in which the airbag system didn't perform as designed.

The recall includes models from the 2013 through 2017 years: the Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra and Rogue. The NV200 and NV Taxi are also included as well as the Chevrolet City Express, which is made by Nissan. All are variations of the same basic van.

Nissan released the following statement regarding the recall.

"Nissan Group is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers. Nissan Group has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of its intention to recall certain MY2013-2017 Nissan Altima, LEAF, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Sentra, Rogue, NV200/Chevrolet City Express/Taxi; Infiniti JX35/QX60 and Q50 vehicles to remedy the passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS).

The planned remedy varies by vehicle and will include software reprogramming in some models and hardware replacement in other models.

Nissan Group is currently developing its remedy plan and will begin notifying dealers in late May. Owners will be notified within 60 days. Customers will receive interim notification letters, followed by final notification letters once the remedy is available."

The automaker's Infiniti division is also part of the recalls, which includes the JX-35, QX-60 and the Q-50 sedan.
