'Sugar' Shane Mosley helps toddler after crash on 405 Freeway

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Former world boxing champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley was known for his quick reflexes inside the ring, but it was his fast reaction on the 405 Freeway that helped a father and young son.

Mosley said he was returning home after his son's soccer game Sunday afternoon when he witnessed a multi-car crash on the northbound 405 Freeway near the 105 interchange.

"I was the first one on the scene," Mosely told ABC7.

Mosley, 44, said he and his girlfriend stopped immediately to help. That's when Mosley said he heard the cries of a child.

"I was hearing the baby crying and my girl, she got out of the car with me as well," Mosley recalled. "So we took the baby out and I noticed that the gentleman was kind of unconscious, kind of woozy, so I asked him if he was alright and let him know that we had his son."

Mosley, who grew up in Pomona, won eight world titles during his career and said the skills he developed while training helped him on Sunday.

"I was very fast, but very careful with the father because he was complaining about his back right away," Mosley said.

Sunday's events brought back painful memories of a crash Mosley was involved in years ago that took the life of his nephew.

This time, Mosley said he was glad he was able to help. At the time of his actions, the boxer said the family didn't know who he was.

"When he finally figured out who I was, even at the hospital, he broke down in tears and said, 'Oh my God you guys are like angels and you helped me with my son. You didn't have to stop' and he just thanked me, he kept thanking me," Mosley said.
