Beach closed in Dana Point after 10-foot shark spotted

The sighting of a 10-foot shark forced a water evacuation near Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point on Tuesday.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department said the shark was spotted about 300 yards off Salt Creek Point at about 3:50 p.m.

Deputies said the water was declared off-limits due to the shark's size, which would indicate it's more mature and able to be a human predator.

Lifeguards said hours later, beachgoers were allowed back into the water but warned of the sighting and to enter the water at their own risk.

Over the next 18 to 24 hours, lifeguards said they would continue to patrol the area and re-evaluate the safety status of the beaches.
