Two people were shot and wounded in Elysian Park Friday evening when they were confronted by two assailants who stole the victims' bicycles, authorities said.

The shooting happened at about 8:53 p.m. on a popular Riverside Drive bike path near the 5 Freeway, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division.

The attackers, believed to be members of a well-known gang in the area, approached the victims and demanded their bikes, the LAPD said. When the bicyclists put up a struggle they were both shot in the legs, police said.

The thieves were last seen peddling away on the stolen bikes, heading northbound along the Los Angeles River near Oros Street.

No description of the pair being sought was available.

The wounded individuals are expected to survive after suffering injuries that were not life-threatening.
