A man in his 60s was shot in the chest near a hiking trail in Yorba Linda Monday morning, the Orange County Fire Authority said.

The incident took place around 8 a.m. near Buena Vista and Lakeview avenues. An investigation was underway.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department 73-year-old Jack Horn Jr., of Yorba Linda, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

"We're still trying to piece together exactly what may have happened here in the lake bed. We're not sure, and hopefully we'll be able to get some more facts and some answers as the investigation goes on," said OCSD Lt. Mark Stichter.

The victim was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. His condition was not known.

"What I just heard the guy was just saying, 'Put down the gun. Put down the gun.' And then from there, he put down the gun and then they had him, they handcuffed him and put him in the back of the car," described area resident David Hernandez.

Authorities said the relationship between Horn and victim and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

Horn was booked for assault with a deadly weapon.
