LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The family of slain Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen joined other law enforcement personnel for a rally in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday to speak out against Propositions 57 and 62.

Propositions 57 and 62 deal with the early release of non-violent offenders and replacing the death penalty with life in prison, respectively.

People and law enforcement personnel who gathered at the rally said the passage of the propositions would not only put law enforcement at a greater risk, but also the public.

Owen, a decorated 29-year veteran with the sheriff's department, was gunned down one month ago while responding to a burglary call in Lancaster. During the rally, his family said Owen was an outspoken opponent of both propositions.

The family urges everyone to fully research the propositions before casting their vote.

"At the end of the day, folks, this is not about black, this is not about white, this is not about Republican, this is not about Democrat - it's about doing the right thing for California," Owen's wife, Tania Owen, said.
