Orange County votes Democrat for 1st time since 1936

YORBA LINDA, Calif. (KABC) -- In another twist for the historic 2016 election, Orange County voters favored a Democratic presidential candidate over a Republican for the first time in 80 years.

Home to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, Orange County has long been known as a Republican stronghold.

But on Election Day, for the first time since 1936, more voters in Orange County picked a Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, over a Republican, President-elect Donald Trump.

The election outcome surprised many people ABC7 spoke with at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda on Wednesday.

"It came as a surprise he was elected for so many of us, but there will be peaceful transition and the people have spoken," Betty Denitz of Beverly Hills said.

While some called for a peaceful transition, protesters marched through the streets in opposition of the election results.

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, about 300 protesters marched across the campus of the University of California, Irvine.
