ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- A 16-year-old exchange student from China drowned in a pool at the home where he was staying at in Anaheim, police said.

The incident happened just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the backyard of a home on the 800 block of West North Street. According to police, the exchange student was not alone at the time; several people were with him inside the gated pool area.

Investigators say the teen drifted into the deep end just before he was pulled out of the water. CPR was performed at the home. The boy was taken to Anaheim Regional Medical Center in critical condition but later died.

Police say they do not suspect any foul play. The Chinese Consulate has been notified about the boy's death. According to police, the home is known for hosting other Chinese exchange students.

The 16-year-old boy had only been living at the home for about a week. It was not immediately known which school he was attending in the area.
