A report of a man screaming led police to a recreation center in North Hollywood where they found one man stabbed to death and another suffering from multiple stab wounds on Saturday.

Los Angeles police said they responded to the Vineland Recreation Center Park in the 11100 block of Victory Boulevard near Bonner Avenue at about 6:35 a.m.

Investigators said 67-year-old Federico Hernandez was walking through the park to get exercise while collecting bottles and cans when he was confronted by 29-year-old James Medrano.

Authorities stated Medrano, of North Hollywood, attacked Hernandez, stabbing him multiple times.

Medrano then continued his rampage in the park, attacking and stabbing a 61-year-old man multiple times, according to officials.

Police said Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was rushed to the hospital and was last listed in serious, but stable condition.

Investigators stated the victims were not related.

Medrano was arrested near the scene. He was booked for murder and attempted murder.

The Vineland Recreation Center Park was closed to the public as officials investigated.

Anyone with information that could aid detectives in their investigation was urged to call Det. Dave Peteque with the Los Angeles Police Department at (818) 374-1934.
