Heavy rain causes thick mud, debris flow in Duarte
DUARTE, Calif. (KABC) -- The second of three storms caused a mud and debris flow that swept past K-rails, clogged up a roadway and shut down others in Duarte Friday afternoon.
Crews shut down parts of roads and urged residents to keep trash cans and cars from the street. The hillsides above Duarte were recently charred by the Fish Fire.
Mike Shane, who lives in the area, was philosophical about the mudflow and its consequences.
"What are you going to do? It's just part of life, and here we are again," he said. "It's the fourth week in a row."
A flash flood watch was issued for burn areas in Los Angeles County, including this area, which is also under a yellow alert.
"We've never seen it this bad," said another resident, adding that he and his family have lived in Duarte for 16 years.
City officials have stayed in the neighborhoods to assess the situation in case people need to be evacuated.
This second storm brought about 2 inches of rain to same areas of the Southland. Another storm is set to hit by Sunday, with the possibility of bringing another 1-2 inches of rain.
Asked if the situation was serious, Larry Breceda, Duarte's public safety manager, replied: "Absolutely, yes."
"We're asking all residents to be prepared to evacuate with all their important documents, prescriptions -- everything they need," he said.
Resident Austin Fuentes said he planned on waiting to "see what happens and we'll be ready to go."
