An armed woman was shot during an officer-involved shooting that resulted from a barricade situation in Silver Lake Monday afternoon.

Los Angeles police said the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Edgecliffe Drive regarding calls about a "combative woman" who may have been armed inside a home.

The 46-year-old woman barricaded herself inside the house.

"Eventually, that woman came out of her residence with a rifle in hand. The officers attempted to use less lethal bean bags in an attempt to detain her. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful and an officer-involved shooting occurred," LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez said.

Neighbors tried to figure out what happened when they were surprised by three to four gunshots around 6 p.m.

It was unclear how many times the woman was shot. She was rushed to the hospital where she will undergo surgery. Her condition was unknown.

Residents said they were stunned by the violence.

"Not here. Not here. It's a very quiet neighborhood. Everybody works and goes to school. It's not that environment," resident Gerald Butler said.

No officers were injured. The neighborhood was cordoned off while investigators gathered evidence.

The investigation was ongoing.
