High winds topple trees, knock out power to parts of Southern California

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Howling winds on Friday morning continued to blow through Southern California after downed power lines and toppled trees resulted in hazardous conditions overnight.

A high wind advisory is scheduled to remain in place until 9 a.m. for areas such as Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Antelope valleys.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said 13,000 customers were still without power, with the hardest hit areas including Exposition Park, Los Feliz, El Sereno, Hollywood and Echo Park.

Battered by powerful winds, a large tree came crashing down on two cars in Inglewood.

After restoring electricity to more than 5,300 L.A. County customers, Southern California Edison said 1,648 were still affected by outages in Lennox, Compton and Whittier.

Late Thursday evening, a large power outage had been spotted near Normandie Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard in the Jefferson Park area.

A large tree was toppled in the 11100 block of Freeman Avenue in Inglewood and appeared to cause damage to a car and part of a fence.

A large tree was also knocked down in a Ralphs parking lot on Hawthorne Boulevard in Hawthorne, landing on two vehicles.

Gusty conditions are expected to persist in Southern California through Saturday.
