TORRANCE, Calif. -- Two kids were hospitalized Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle in Torrance.

The crash happened around 8:52 a.m. as the victims, an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother, were walking to school at Madison and Newton streets.

Police say they were crossing at a four-way crosswalk when they were struck by a white Chevy Sonic that was making a left turn from southbound Madison to eastbound Newton.

The 5-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and his sister had minor injuries, police said. Both were transported to a local hospital.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
