A man was fatally shot in the head in Lincoln Heights Tuesday afternoon as authorities search for a suspect who fled the scene.

Authorities said the shooting happened around 2:53 p.m. in the 1800 block of North Johnston Street. A suspect between the age of 25 and 35 was seen running southbound on the street.

The man who was shot and killed was between the age of 25 and 30. Authorities said someone came up to him and opened fire.

LAPD Capt. Ruby Flores said residents in the area are getting fed up with the gang activity and the crime. Because of that, she urges anyone who witnessed something to come forward.

"During this time of year, things get busy in the summertime and traditionally there's a lot more crime that happens. This is where we have to rely on the community to come forward and have confidence that they can call and provide information without being identified," she said.

A neighbor in the area said moments before the shooting took place a van drove up and someone in the van held a gun to his head, asking if he was in a gang. The man said no and walked away as the person drove off.

A block away from the shooting, authorities said a pedestrian was also hit by a car at the intersection of East Main and North Johnston streets. Authorities said the incident was not related to the shooting.

An ambulance was requested for the deceased man and pedestrian, whose condition is unknown.
