A reckless driving suspect sped along the 110 Freeway as well as surface streets before crashing into a power pole in South Los Angeles on Tuesday.

With officers chasing, he sped along the 110 Freeway and snaked in and out of traffic as he switched to surface streets.

As he fled from officers, the driver crashed a couple times and almost hit a pedestrian as he made a left turn on 92nd Street.

Trying to make a fast turn on the 8800 block of Figueroa Street, he lost control at the intersection, smashed into a power pole and knocked down part of a home's metal fence. He tried to back up his car, but the pickup truck could not move.

Witnesses described the chase and the sound of the crash as a scary experience.

"It was like a bomb," said witness Carl Washington. "Scared the (expletive) out of me."

Police surrounded the vehicle, and the suspect surrendered. He was taken into custody.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews responded to the scene to try to repair the utility pole, after power was knocked out to nearby homes for hours.

The driver was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. No other serious injuries were reported.
