NICKERSON GARDENS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man has died after being shot in a deputy-involved shooting in the Nickerson Gardens area of Watts Wednesday night.

Authorities said the shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. near Imperial Highway and Slater Street.

Deputies were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on Slater Avenue, facing the wrong way on the street. A person was sitting in the driver's seat, and a man was standing outside of the vehicle. When the deputies approached, the man standing outside the vehicle ran eastbound through a driveway and across Imperial Highway, armed with a handgun, sheriff's officials said.

The deputies chased after the suspect as he ran into a housing development, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck at least one time in the torso and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

His identity was not released pending notification of family members.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, officials said, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
