High-speed chase suspect runs red lights, slams into truck before surrendering in Compton

FULLERTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect wanted on a traffic violation led authorities on a reckless, high-speed chase through Orange and Los Angeles counties before slamming into a truck and surrendering to police in Compton Thursday night.

The chase started at about 10 p.m. in Fullerton. Police said the suspect failed to yield and was wanted on other traffic violations when the chase ensued.

The driver, in a silver sedan, traveled from Fullerton to Buena Park and made his way to the Santa Fe Springs area in Los Angeles County.

Within 30 minutes, patrol vehicles stopped the chase from the ground and began tracking the vehicle from the air.

The driver was traveling at normal speeds on surface streets before getting onto the 605 Freeway in Norwalk, Bellflower and Cerritos, where California Highway Patrol officials continued the pursuit from the ground.

Soon after, the driver drove onto surface streets and picked up speeds, making sharp turns and passing red lights. At one point, the driver traveled at 90 mph along Del Amo Boulevard in Cerritos as CHP patrol vehicles followed close behind.

At times, the silver sedan drove with its headlights off and on the wrong side of the road, speeding through traffic, nearly missing cars in the Long Beach area.

CHP officials backed off the chase for a second time and went on tracking mode as the reckless driver made his way into the city of Compton.

The driver eventually hit the back of a pickup truck at the intersection of Compton Boulevard and Acacia Avenue before continuing on surface streets.

CHP patrol vehicles took over the chase again, and the suspect surrendered soon after in the 1500 block of Nestor Avenue in Compton.

The unidentified driver got out of his vehicle with his hands up before being taken into custody by police.
