MELROSE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was shot and killed early Monday evening in the Melrose District of Los Angeles, prompting a search of the suspect, authorities said.

The shooting was reported shortly before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Melrose and Sierra Bonita avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The unidentified victim was found dead at the scene, the LAPD said, adding that some 15 gunshots were fired in the incident.

"He dropped his phone and he picked up the shells from the bullets," witness Cesar Barrios said of the shooter. "Then he touched the person, made sure he's really dead. He was just acting like normal, like nothing happened."

A handgun was recovered at the scene, investigators said.

A detailed description of the gunman was not immediately available. A black SUV was being sought, according to the LAPD.

"We need help," said police Lt. John Radtke, asking for witnesses to come forward.

Melrose Avenue was temporarily closed in both directions at the location as the investigation got underway.
