Firefighters extinguish blaze threatening homes in Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) -- San Bernardino County firefighters have largely extinguished a 15-acre brush fire that broke out in Fontana that was previously threatening structures.

Eight engines, a fire crew and one helicopter responded to beat back the flames, dubbed the "Jurupa Fire," amid 103-degree temperatures.

A photograph taken by an area resident showed flames and smoke adjacent to homes.

No evacuations were ordered as firefighters set up a structure defense operation at Teaberry Court, Daybreak Lane and Ridgecrest Drive.

San Bernardino County fire officials reported that firefighters on the scene were making "good progress" in containing the blaze.

Earlier, a brush fire burned through about 15 acres along both sides of Highway 74 in Hemet, fire officials said.

The Rouse Fire was reported around 1:15 p.m. near the Cranston Fire Station in the San Bernardino National Forest. It started on the north side of the highway and then jumped over to the other side, forcing a road closure.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported in that fire.

Officials are investigating the cause.
