SoCal groups do their part to help victims of the massive quake in Mexico

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Southern California organizations worked together to help the victims of a massive earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Mexico last week.

Eva Rasgado is a retired teacher living in Juchitan, Oaxaca, a town that was devastated by the 8.1-magnitude earthquake. Although she's sleeping on her patio in fear her home is unstable, she said she feels fortunate considering many people lost their homes and loved ones.

The heartbroken and frustrated Rasgado showed Eyewitness News in a Facetime call some of the rubble left behind and added that there isn't enough man power to pick up the pieces.

"I know help will come," she said as she started to cry.

Other groups are also fundraising for communities outside of Juchitan. The death toll in the state of Oaxaca is 76.

"Maybe some of them have just received electricity in some of their towns," said Isai Pazos, with the Regional Organization of Oaxaca. "Maybe they just paved their streets. So that's why these communities are not that known and they're forgotten sometimes."

Pazos and others plan on hand-delivering the donations next month.
