Father of 7 ID'd as victim in Santa Ana hit-and-run

SANTA ANA (KABC) -- The victim of a deadly hit-and-run crash in Santa Ana has been identified as 57-year-old Juan Manuel Segura from Orange.

On Sunday at 7:53 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Broadway and Borchard after receiving calls of a man trapped under a vehicle.

After paramedics were able to get him out from under the car, Segura was pronounced dead at the scene.

A day after he was identified, family and friends gathered at the intersection to place flowers and comfort each other.

"This is not right, you know it's something that no one deserves to die like this," said one of Segura's daughters, who did not want to be identified.

Segura's family says he was walking to the bus stop from his sister's house that night.

Witnesses say a black pickup truck hit him in the crosswalk, then took off.

That's when another car hit him and dragged him several yards. That driver stopped to help.

"Unbeknownst to them, they strike the victim who's laying in the street. The car stops on top of him," said Corporal Anthony Bertagna from the Santa Ana police department.

His family is in shock and heartbroken over his sudden death.

"He was a hard worker. He did what he could for the family, he was very responsible, never missed a day at work," said his daughter.

Santa Ana police say they need witnesses to come forward because they have limited information. The pickup had been driving southbound on Broadway at Borchard when the victim was struck. The truck was last seen fleeing the scene southbound Broadway to eastbound on Edinger Avenue out of sight.

Detectives say the black pickup truck will have damage to the left front bumper.

"We need to know why he left the scene, because he left somebody there to die," Bertagna said.

The family is pleading with the driver to turn himself or herself in, so they can begin to process their loss.

"I don't hate the person that did it, I don't want to hate them, but I would just appreciate it if they could come forward and let justice be done," his daughter said.
