Long Beach food drive hosts a canny competition

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- When it comes to design, an architect's first choice of supplies isn't usually a can of food, but it was recently in Long Beach.

"Canstruction" is an unusual competition in downtown Long Beach where participants are tasked with building artistic creations entirely out of food cans.

Teams from five engineering and architectural companies created visually stunning can structures in the lobby of the Landmark Square Building.

This year's theme is "Rock-Can-Roll" with a standout entry titled "Can-chella."

The event benefits "Food Finders." All of the canned goods will later be donated to help feed the hungry in Long Beach.

Last year's event generated a 28,000-pound donation of canned goods.

You can vote for your favorite larger than life masterpiece by dropping off a can of food until Oct. 1.
