Motorist shot while stopped at red light in Inglewood

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A motorist waiting at a red light in Inglewood was shot. That driver then lost control of his car and slammed the vehicle into a building.

The victim was stopped at a light in the 1400 block of North La Brea Avenue around 1:15 a.m. when he was fired upon by another driver, Inglewood police said.

Investigators said they're not sure if the shooting was random or if the victim was targeted.

The victim was grazed by a bullet, then swerved into a nearby structure. It was not known what additional injuries he incurred in the crash following the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was listed in good condition.

The victim's car was lodged at least 10 feet inside the building, which was left with a gaping hole following the crash. The car was eventually pulled out of the structure, and workers began patching up the wall.

The city's building and safety inspectors were called to the scene to assess the integrity of the structure.

Susan Creamer and her husband have owned the building since 1972. Their tenants operate a printing business making envelopes for local churches.

"There's about five employees, and they're going to be on vacation I guess for a while. What else can you do?" Creamer said.

Employee Maria Hernandez said she has never seen much crime in the area and described the shooting as very rare.

"I've been here, working here 14 years. Very safe, nothing like this," she said.

Police have very limited information about the shooting suspect. Investigators said the suspect may have been driving a Jeep SUV. No further details were immediately available.

Authorities are looking for possible surveillance video in the area and are asking for any witnesses to come forward.
