LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An inmate has died after being pepper-sprayed at the men's central jail in downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities said the inmate attacked his cellmate Tuesday, and that a deputy used pepper spray to break things up.

The inmate was then taken to the showers for decontamination, but became ill and lost consciousness.

Deputies and a nurse tried to resuscitate him, but it didn't work and the inmate died at the scene, according to authorities.

Detectives are investigating and the coroner will perform an autopsy on the inmate, whose name has not been released.
