Authorities shut down some northbound lanes of the 14 Freeway in Newhall Wednesday night after a car fire ignited nearby brush.

The vehicle caught fire along the freeway near the Newhall Avenue exit, authorities said. The car had a mattress stuck underneath it and it spread to nearby brush.

California Highway Patrol officers shut down the northbound lanes of the freeway for a short time, then opened up two as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

It was unclear if the driver or anyone else was injured. It was also unknown what caused the car fire.

The brush fire burned 2 to 3 acres before it was put out by firefighters around 10:30 p.m.

Traffic was backed up for miles as authorities put out hot spots and cleaned up the car fire debris.

The investigation was ongoing.
