2 SoCal U-Haul companies offer free 30-day storage to Thomas Fire, Creek Fire victims

CANYON COUNTRY, SANTA CLARITA (KABC) -- Two Southern California U-Haul companies are offering free 30-day self storage and U-Box container use for residents impacted by the Thomas Fire and Creek Fire.

The U-Haul Company of San Fernando Valley and Van Nuys/San Luis Obispo made seven self-storage facilities across six cities available to residents who want to use the 30-day disaster relief program.

The wind-driven Thomas Fire exploded to 70 square miles Tuesday.

The Thomas Fire, which has burned 50,000 acres in Ventura County, started in an area north of Santa Paula Monday night and ripped through the area into the city of Ventura within hours. It has caused thousands of people to evacuate their homes and burned hundreds of those structures.

Amid the strong, dry winds, the Creek Fire in Sylmar erupted and also promoted evacuations and destroyed residences Tuesday afternoon.

As of Tuesday night, neither blaze was contained.
