A suspect was wounded in an officer-involved shooting that resulted from a fight with an officer in Long Beach Saturday.

The gunfire rang out shortly before 6 p.m. in an alley between Adriatic and Baltic avenues. Investigators said officers tried to stop a suspect who was on a bike, but the 25-year-old took off running.

"When the officer caught up with the suspect, the suspect and the officer got in a fight where the officer was punched in the face by the suspect," Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson said. "The suspect tried to disarm our officer, which led to the officer-involved shooting."

Authorities said one officer opened fire, striking the suspect once in the leg. He was rushed to a hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Witness Lena Major said she heard what sounded like three gunshots and ended up seeing a swarm of police on her street.

"I look out my window and I see police cars coming up the street and I'm like, 'What is going on here?" she said.

Other residents said the gunfire was surprising for the quiet neighborhood.

"It's been pretty quiet. I've been living here for about eight years and we've had no problems," Letty Carillo said.

It was unclear what the suspect was wanted for before the confrontation happened.

The investigation is ongoing.
