ORANGE, Calif. (KABC) -- A man in a wheelchair died after he was hit by a car while crossing the street with his daughter and her husband on Monday.

All three pedestrians were transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange as trauma patients, Orange Police said. The husband and wife were listed in stable condition late Monday night.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of La Veta Avenue and Devon Road. A man in his 50s was crossing in the marked cross walk with his wife, who is in her 40s, and her father, who was in 80s.

Police said they were hit by a Volvo heading westbound on La Veta at an unknown speed. The female driver of the Volvo stayed at the scene. She told investigators she did not see the family crossing.

Neighbors heard the crash and rushed to the scene.

"The disabled person was on the wheelchair. He was restrained on there, so they had to cut him out of there," said neighbor Joel Soriano. "He couldn't get out. The seat belt was just jammed in there."

Area residents say the collision occurred in a dark part of the street that is dangerous for pedestrians at night.

An investigation was ongoing.
