Adoption event held for 54 cats removed from unsanitary Pasadena home

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- The Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA is hosting a free adoption event this weekend to find homes for 54 cats rescued from a Pasadena home.

The adoptions start at 9 a.m. on Friday. The cats will require extra attention. They have not been adequately socialized and are fearful of people, though some are beginning to show improvement.

All 54 cats were removed from an unsanitary home near the intersection of Allen Avenue and Corson Street on Jan. 23 after an anonymous complaint. Officers talked with the homeowner, who agreed to surrender the cats.

"We were able to come in with our animal control officers and take 54 of them out of the home, bring them back to the shelter, get them exams, get them looked at and give them some good quality food and clean environment and love," said Julie Bank from the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA. "It's been a really incredible week."

They're calling them "the fabulous 54." Most range in age from 6 months to 5 years old. They have been vaccinated and treated for parasites and fleas.

Pasadena Humane Society officials said they removed 23 cats from the same home in January of last year.
