A standoff that lasted nearly five hours in Orange came to an end with the chase suspect in custody Sunday night.

It all started at about 5:40 p.m. in the area of Tustin Street and Lincoln Avenue, when a suspected DUI driver refused to pull over for officers, according to Orange police.

The unidentified man, who police said was believed to be under the influence of drugs, eventually pulled over near Kingsley Street and Lincoln Avenue, where an armored vehicle and several patrol cars surrounded him.

The man remained inside his white pickup truck for about five hours, appearing agitated while yelling out toward officers with his door open.

Officers at one point fired pepper balls into the truck in an attempt to get the man out of the vehicle, but that did not seem to work.

Orange police said shortly before 11 p.m. that the suspect was taken into custody with the help of a police service dog. The man was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The man was not armed but made threats toward officers, officials said.

No evacuations were in place for the neighborhood, but homeowners were asked to stay inside their houses as the standoff continued.
