At least nine people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, officials said.

Two people were trapped in their vehicles and the highway was blocked off in both directions in the Big Rock area as firefighters worked to free them and treat patients.

Officials brought in helicopters to evacuate the patients. Two were transported by air and seven by ambulance to local hospitals.

One eastbound lane of PCH was reopened after 5 p.m., but the others remained closed for hours.

All lanes of the highway were reopened around 6:30 p.m., according to the California Highway patrol.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
