LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A Lancaster family is mourning the loss of a beloved basset hound who was killed in a vicious dog attack.

Millie was 11 years old and her owner, Leanne Mothershead, said the attack happened Tuesday. Her friend was taking care of all her dogs while she was on vacation.

She said her friend is now too shaken up about the incident, but she told Mothershead what happened.

"It was their intent to attack because it was no warning. It was just all of the sudden, they were there from behind. One went for the stomach and one went for the throat," Mothershead said.

Her friend was bitten in the knee during the attack, but she managed to save the other dogs.

One of the dogs that attacked is possibly a shepherd mix - black and tan colored. The other dog is a bit smaller. They searched the area looking for the dogs and they worry it could happen again.

Animal control is investigating the incident, but so far have not been able to find the two dogs or the owner.
