Fundraiser held in San Bernardino for Riverside County sheriff's deputy who survived Las Vegas shooting

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A fundraiser was held Thursday night in San Bernardino for one of the survivors of the Las Vegas mass shooting.

That survivor is Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Jason McMillan. His love of country music brought him to the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.

"It's not easy. Nothing is easy about it. Just try to move forward," he said.

Since that horrific night, McMillan hasn't been able to work.

"Recovery has taken it's time, but I'm really pushing it. I want to go back to work. I miss my job," he said.

So at the fundraiser, which was held at the Branding Iron, his colleagues and friends raised money to keep him going.

"He still isn't able to walk, but he definitely has some sensation and he's got some feeling and he's progressing every single day," coworker Sgt. Brandi Swan said.

McMillan said seeing the news about the Florida school shooting hasn't been easy, but he had some advice for those who now know his experience.

"Stay motived. Look to the future. Don't stay fixated on what's happened and just keep pushing forward," he said.

The organizers of the fundraiser were able to get 150 baskets donated for the cause. They raffled them off and sold merchandise that said "Country Strong," with half of those proceeds going directly to the McMillan family.
