WEST HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who was assaulted by four men while walking home in West Hollywood the night before Memorial Day remains in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury.

On May 24, Kirk Doffing was attacked between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Santa Monica Boulevard at San Vicente Boulevard.

"The suspects approached him from behind, and then the suspect who was wearing the trench coat punched the victim three to four times, resulting in him falling down and hitting his head," Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Sgt. Richard Bowman said.

Bowman added that the suspects apparently targeted Doffing at random.

Doffing has been in a medically induced coma for eight days. His friends and family are asking for witnesses to come forward.

"This was his street. The fact that he was alone, he was outnumbered, how could people do that?" friend Eli Arias said.

"He's probably the most loving, caring person I've ever met in my life. He's not the type of person who would instigate a fight, nor would he entertain it," roommate Jo Jo Chettaraj said.

The suspects were described as men in their 20s, dressed all in black. One of the suspects wore a trench coat.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
