SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters responding to a house fire in San Bernardino found hundreds of marijuana plants inside the home.

The fire erupted Wednesday night at a house on the 100 block of South Newport Avenue. When crews arrived, there were flames coming from the roof, attic and garage area.

Officials said firefighters found the entire house and garage filled with 400 to 500 marijuana plants. The electrical system to grow the plants was arcing and popping, so it slowed down firefighting efforts.

The fire was eventually knocked down and a narcotics team from the San Bernardino Police Department removed the plants.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
