The man who was killed in a car-to-car shooting on the 60 Freeway in Rubidoux Saturday has been identified as Sheldon Martin.

RUBIDOUX, Calif. (KABC) -- The man who was killed in a car-to-car shooting on the westbound 60 Freeway in the Rubidoux area Saturday has been identified as a Chaffey College athlete.

Sheldon Martin was one of five men traveling in a white four-door west of Main Street when they were shot at by a suspect or suspects in a dark-colored sedan.

The five men had allegedly got into some sort of verbal altercation with another group at Bakers Drive Thru prior to the shooting, and were followed onto the freeway.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Their conditions remain unknown.

Martin was set to begin his first season as a wide receiver for the Chaffey College football team in Rancho Cucamonga this fall. Grief counselors were on hand Monday to help students deal with the murder.

Chaffey College's Equipment Manager Justin Caudill said he was stunned to hear Martin was killed.

"Sheldon was one of the good guys, made it a daily routine to stop by my office on his own time, shake my hand, give me a chest bump, and constantly told me, "just checking in on you Justin, just wanna make sure you're OK," Caudill said.

The school also released an official statement Sunday: "Panther Athletics is saddened to hear of the passing of freshman wide receiver Sheldon Martin. Sheldon was a kind young man who will be profoundly missed by his teammates, coaches, and the athletics staff. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information was urged to contact the Riverside County Sheriff's Department at (760) 393-3526.
