72-year-old armed suspect barricaded in Simi Valley home

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A 72-year-old man allegedly armed with a handgun was barricaded in a Simi Valley home on Sunday after police said he attacked his nephew with a baseball bat.

Police responded to a report of a "weapon in progress" around 3:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of Latham Street, according to a Simi Valley Police Department press release.

The suspect, identified as Raymond Williams, allegedly assaulted his 50-year-old nephew with the bat before brandishing the handgun.

The victim received minor injuries.

Police said the incident began with an altercation between the suspect and the nephew inside the home before it progressed outside.

The suspect then re-entered the residence and barricaded himself inside the residence.

Simi Valley SWAT and Crisis Negotiation officers were at the scene to make contact with the suspect before it came to an end around 10 p.m.

Simi Valley police said the suspect was apprehended, but it was unknown whether authorities made entry or if the suspect surrendered.

Family members inside the home, along with neighbors, were evacuated and temporarily relocated at the police department.

No major injuries were reported, police said.
