Bomb squad renders suspicious device 'safe' in Fullerton, police say

FULLERTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities responded to report of a suspicious pipe found in Fullerton on Monday and later announced that a bomb squad had "rendered the device safe."

The bomb squad with the Fullerton Police Department was summoned to the 3000 block of Euclid Street, where officers evaluated the device.

The street was closed in both directions after officials said nearby residents spotted the suspicious PVC pipe near the roadway.

"It's, approximately, a foot and a half long, maybe four inches wide, and it's a black PVC-like device," said Sgt. John Radus of Fullerton PD.

Homes in the area were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the police department stated on Twitter that the device had been rendered safe.

The bomb squad used a robot to handle the pipe. It was eventually detonated and police said no explosives were found inside.

Authorities said the incident was a good example of residents being vigilant.

"If you look at current events in the world, you know, it's important to stay on top of things," Radus added. "And law enforcement can't be everywhere, so we do rely on citizens to contact us and let us know when they see things that don't seem right."
