COSTA MESA, Calif. (KABC) -- A pregnant woman and her husband had to run for cover after suspects in a stolen car slammed into their Costa Mesa home Tuesday night. A search was underway for two men who fled the scene on foot.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on the 2700 block of Mendoza Drive. No injuries were reported. The couple's two-story home had to be red-tagged due to extensive damage.

The woman, who is seven months pregnant with the couple's first child, was asleep on the second floor when the crash occurred.

After making sure the homeowners inside were OK, neighbor Andrew Krikorian, a former Marine, saw one of the suspects making a run for it.

"I just took action and chased after him. He threw his shoulder into me, he wrapped me up on my left side, and I took him down kind of like a free safety running down a receiver, and we hit the ground pretty hard," said Krikorian.

After a struggle on the ground, the suspect got away. Police say the 2012 Ford Focus was stolen from a Huntington Beach rental company on Monday.

The homeowners say a cellphone and sweatshirt were left at the scene, and their diligent neighbor also gathered another piece of evidence during the scuffle: the suspect's shoe.

"I was able to get that and pulled it out. So if you see a one-shoed person out there, it's probably him," said Krikorian.

Other neighbors also jumped into action, calling 911. They're hoping for the best for the couple and their new baby girl on the way.

"They did an awful lot of remodeling, because it needed it, and now they're going to have to do it all over again," said neighbor Anne Kelly.

Descriptions of the two suspects were not immediately available. Anyone with information was asked to call Costa Mesa police at (714) 754-5280.
