Car slams into parked big rig on 5 Freeway near Castaic Lake; 3 killed

CASTAIC, Calif. (KABC) -- Two children and one adult were killed in a violent crash on the 5 Freeway near Castaic Lake early Monday morning.

Authorities say a white Honda entered the brake-check area on the southbound 5 Freeway for an unknown reason at about 1 a.m. and slammed into the back of a parked big rig.

"It's unknown if the driver fell asleep," said CHP Sgt. Michelle Esposito

All three victims -- a male adult, a boy and a girl -- were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators say there were no skid marks at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
