SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- An armed carjacking suspect opened fire and barricaded himself inside a home for about five hours in South Gate Monday, prompting nearby evacuations.
Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau personnel were sent to the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue at about 10:20 a.m. to assist South Gate police after volleys of rounds were fired from inside the residence to the outside, police said.
The incident began at about 2:30 a.m., and investigators believe the suspect knew that police were watching him from outside the home.
The suspect surrendered to police shortly before 3 p.m., and evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes.
South Gate police identified the suspect as a 23-year-old man. No further details were immediately released.
