COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- An armed carjacker remained on the loose Monday morning after crashing one car and attempting to steal at least two others in Compton.

It all started just after midnight when California Highway Patrol officers tried to pull over a speeding vehicle on the westbound 91 Freeway.

The pursuit continued onto the 710 Freeway, where authorities say the driver careened off the Alondra exit, wrecked the car and took off on foot.

The CHP says the suspect eventually made his way back onto the 710 Freeway, where he tried to carjack two other vehicles, including a security guard's car.

"I see the suspect approaching the fuel truck, trying to jump in the passenger side seat, trying to open up the door and everything. The truck driver took off. He came up to my truck, tried to pull my handle and everything, but I drew my weapon," said witness Andrew Figueroa.

Figueroa said the suspect took off running.

Police say the suspect then approached a third vehicle and successfully carjacked it with the driver still inside. It was not immediately known if that person was injured.
