MAYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigated an officer-involved shooting with a chase suspect in Maywood on Tuesday.

The shooting happened on 54th Street and Maywood Avenue shortly after 5 p.m.

After leading police on a short chase, a man yelled that he was shot twice by Huntington Park police officers. An eyewitness sent us video taken moments after the man crashed his car into a fence.

"Just a very loud crash. We were thinking that somebody had hit a car," an unidentified neighbor said. "We came outside and saw the truck smashed into the gate."

Detectives say the man driving the car was driving erratically down Maywood Avenue and would not stop when officers tried to pull him over. Police say he turned and crashed into a red truck.

"As the officers arrived and ordered the suspect out of the vehicle, he put the car in reverse and apparently tried to run the officers over," said Lt. Dave Coleman with the sheriff's department.

That's when eyewitnesses say the officer fired at the man.

"He backed up and that's when the undercover just shot him like three times," said Eunice Loya. "As soon as he backed up, he just kept going down the street."

Police say he then lost control of the car, crashing into the fence, and got out and ran.

"The suspect exited the vehicle, ran southbound, followed by the officers who were able to take him into custody without further incident," said Coleman.

Police say the man was shot twice, but is expected to survive. He has not been identified.

Detectives say they found a handgun in the car.

No officers were injured during the incident.
