Child accidentally locked in hot car rescued in Glendale

GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- It was a terrifying moment for the parents of a child who was accidentally locked inside a car in Glendale as temperatures reached record-breaking numbers on Sunday.

The Glendale Fire Department said the parents pulled into a parking spot outside the Glendale Library at about 3 p.m.

The parents exited the SUV and went to get the young girl from her child seat when they realized the keys had been locked inside, according to officials.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and broke out the window to safely get the girl out of the SUV.

"We want to get here fast because we know the consequences. You read about it and you hear about it every year that bad things happen and we just can't take the chance," Capt. Jim Vancil with the Glendale Fire Department said. "So we're going to rush here and give it a quick shot at trying to get through the lock then we're going to break the windows to get in."

Around the time of the incident, the temperature was about 105 degrees. Though sweaty and crying, officials said the child would be alright.
