VENICE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 49-year-old man died after he and two other swimmers were rescued from the ocean off Venice Beach Sunday evening, Los Angeles County authorities said.

County Fire spokeswoman Lidia Barillas says lifeguards responded to reports of three swimmers in distress near Venice Pier around 5:30 p.m. and pulled all three people out of the water.

One of the three swimmers stopped breathing and lost consciousness as lifeguards brought him back to shore. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was identified by coroner's officials as Troy Mendez of Westminster, a suburb of Denver. It was unclear how the long the swimmers were in the water.
