Cal State Long Beach student reports sexual assault at off-campus frat party

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- An investigation is underway after a Cal State Long Beach student claimed she was sexually assaulted at an off-campus fraternity party.

According to Long Beach police, a female student reported to campus security officials early Sunday morning that she was sexually assaulted at a party hosted by Kappa Sigma, which is affiliated with CSULB.

Police said both students and non-students attended the party, where alcohol was believed to be served.

The student told police that the perpetrator was someone she did not know and described him as a man in his early 20s.

No arrests have been made.

The university sent out an advisory about the alleged incident to students.

"I'm not a big partier and my friends are really safe, so I feel safe in my group, but I feel sorry for people that don't in theirs," said Kyra McDonell, a CSULB student.

School officials said the fraternity is sanctioned by the university. The frat house where the alleged incident happened is off campus, so it is being investigated primarily by police.

There was no word on if the university will take any action against the fraternity.

CSULB representative Michael Uhlenkamp said it remains unclear if a member of the fraternity was involved in the incident, but the school is taking the report very seriously.

Eyewitness News knocked on the door of the fraternity house but got no answer. We also put in a call to the national chapter of Kappa Sigma and they have yet to respond.
