SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A domestic violence suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting in South Los Angeles Monday morning after officers say the man shot and wounded his wife.

Police responded to the home on the 1100 block of West 81st Street around 2 a.m. after the suspect's wife called 911. According to investigators, the wife was shot in the shoulder while she was on the phone with dispatchers.

Authorities say the suspect was already outside the home when police arrived. He allegedly began shooting at the two responding officers and they returned fire. The officers were not injured. It was not immediately known if the suspect was struck by the officers' gunfire or if he died from a self-inflicted wound.

The suspect's wife was transported to a local hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. She is expected to recover.

The couple's adult son was home at the time of the shooting, but he was not injured, according to detectives. Officers say they have responded to the home in the past for domestic violence issues.
